Before you run to the pet store, or adoption agency let us learn a little about what it will entail owning one of these friendly fun-loving furballs. Just because they are small doesn’t mean they don’t require a lot of work, we would say as much as a cat or dog. Furthermore, they require an abundance of love and are incredibly social animals.
We have compiled a list of the most asked questions regarding pet ferret care and what it’s actually like to own a pet ferret. We will answer are ferrets good pets?
Pet Ferret – Are Ferrets Good Pets?
We are screaming a big YES! Yes, ferrets make excellent pets! They are funny, loving, kind, loyal, and great cuddlers. However, we need to emphasize that a pet ferret can make a wonderful pet as long as you have the time. They need love, companionship, they need an opportunity to bond with you, feel safe with you, and overall need your care.
To sum it up, if you are willing to put in the work needed, you are sure to have a pet that will fill you with much joy and love. However, like all pets, if you do not train, and try to bond with that animal you may not end up with such a great pet.

What Do Pet Ferrets Eat?
Wild ferrets are strict carnivores. They prey on animals and eat entire carcasses. Your pet ferret is no different. They need a diet high in meat protein to maintain a healthy life. A raw meat diet is best, however, not always obtainable. Wet kitten food is found to be high in meat protein as well as some high meat protein baby foods. They also have dried ferret food that contains a high level of meat protein. (Like most dried foods for pets they do come with their own risks, so do some added research before committing to a dry food diet.)
– How much should I feed my pet ferret?
Most ferrets eat between 5-7% of their body weight every day! Most ferrets weigh between 1-2KG and should eat anywhere from 50-150 grams of food per day. Do keep in mind that a younger ferret requires more food than an older one.
– Can my pet ferret eat fruits and vegetables?
The American Ferret Association advises that ferrets should NOT eat any fruits or vegetables. They do not have a digestive system equipped to handle the carbohydrates. Furthermore, you want to avoid grains, dairy, and chocolate.
– What is a great treat for my pet ferret?
A great treat for your pet ferret could be cat treats, slices of chicken, lamb, or turkey. A favorite for most ferrets is a cooked egg. They love it!
Will My Pet Ferret Smell?
Your pet ferret most likely won’t smell like roses, but there are ways to help prevent them from stinking up the joint. Ferrets are highly intelligent creatures and just like cats like to be clean. They will clean themselves as a cat does, and can easily be trained to use a litter box. Most ferrets sold or adopted will already be neutered, but if not this is a great way to cut down on the smell.
You can bathe a ferret, but we recommend that you keep this to no more than once a month. The slightly musty smell that comes from your ferret is produced by a protective oil on the skin, constant bathing will remove this oil and cause your pet ferret to produce more of the musty smelling oil.
Are Ferrets Hypoallergenic?
Studies have shown that ferrets are in fact a hypoallergenic pet! That is great news for those allergy sufferers. Unlike most cats, dogs, and a lot of rodent-like pets ferrets don’t have fur, they have hair just like us. They do have 2 coats and do shed this “hair” however, they don’t produce dander. Dander is the main cause of animal allergies. So for those of you like our one reader, a pet ferret was the answer her family was looking for.
How Long Will My Pet Ferret Live?
The gap here is big, ferrets live an average of 5-10 years. We know that’s a big gap. From our research and taking some information from trusted vets, we believe this number depends largely on the care they receive from you.
Pet ferrets that are fed a high-quality diet from the start, taken from regular veterinary check-ups, and have an ability to be social with another ferret live longer. That being said, we strongly recommend that you purchase or adopt ferrets in pairs. They are incredibly social and need companionship to strive.
