The dog days of summer are here!
But that doesn’t mean New York City is the dog-event doldrums. Check out Urban Dog’s calendar of Dog Events in New York City in August to find fun activities for you and your pooch.
This month there are plenty of parties, fundraisers, and educational events to choose from. There’s a Miss Dog Mom / Muddy Paws benefit at Boris & Horton, Phase 3 of the Fidelco Service Dog Training Program at the Museum of the Dog, and a hike in Riverdale Park.
Do you know where the phrase “dog days of summer” comes from?
Some people say that it refers to hot, humid days “not fit for a dog.” Other folks say it’s weather that drives dogs mad.
Those are both wrong!
It actually dates back to ancient times. During much of July and into August, the sun rises in the same area of the sky as Sirius, the Dog Star, the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation.
Ancient Romans thought the double whammy of the sun and the Dog Star are what made the late summer so hot and sultry.
